How does copyrighting work for software?

I researched this years ago and this is what I believe is correct: As soon as you write code it falls under copyright protection If you display a copyright notice on your program that just is more proof in a court of law that it's your program and you can take to court anyone who infringes on the copyright. So I now include a copyright line somewhere on my programs: i.e. © 2005 Computer Help Inc.
