VB6 or VB.Net That is the question, so please help.

Hi,

I’m after a bit of advice and am hoping that someone can help me!

Although I work in IT, I am new to scripting, but realise that a quick simple script can save me a significant amount of time. As I need to do things from creating a lookup script in Excel for gathering information from external databases to creating a script that will uninstall one piece of software and install another on multiple users PC (in our Active Directory).

Now, I’m sure that I will go with either VB6 or VB.Net. What I am not sure about is which one to go with. As seeing as I am a total newbie to scripting, I want to choose one language and go for it. Now I know VB6 is the most common language used out there and maybe the simplest to learn. But I keep hearing that VB6 is on its way out and to go for VB.Net. What I am not sure about VB.Net, is that if we do not have the .Net framework (I think I have this right) on our build will this prevent my scripts from running, and is it likely that the market will shift to VB.Net. Why is it important to have the .Net Framework on the clients, how does it work!

P.S. Or should I be looking at Jscript!!

Confused
