How to do auto-login with the help of user_id ?

 Hi,

I want to ask how can we auto-login user with the help of user_id which is coming from the querystring.Actuaaly , i am thinking of do it by using cookies.But i have a doubt is that the right approach or not ?. Kindly share any link , so that i can understand it in better way.
