how to convert a variable to have decimals

Question

Im having a problem working out how to put decimals into my variable. as i ask for a number and i want it to then get 4 decimal places after the number has been entered so say user enters a number eg 4.098 that then gets put into a calculation which has eg 4 + 4 = 8.0098 thanks
