FAX through AT-COMMANDS

Hai,
I need to send FAX via a physical/virutal COM port (No modem is installed or 'standard modem virtual modem over com port').

If i only have serial interface to my data modem, can i send FAX via AT-Commands?
If so, what format of faxes can be sent.

Is it possible via AT-Commands ? ? any suggestions/help/documentation/link/samples please.
