C# String Split

Question

I was reading this article. Split String in C# Question is when I call Split method does it adds more overhead (variables) in the memory?

Strings are immutable types - once created an instance cannot be changed. String.Split() simply produces an array of sub-strings. So it does add more objects to the heap but this is unavoidable.

Incidentally John I wouldn't worry too much about methods in the string class tending to produce a lot of new string instances. Most of these new strings will quickly go out of scope (when say the enclosing method returns) and be quickly destroyed - and the memory freed - by the garbage collector when it does its next generation 0 collection. Normally these types of collections occur quite frequently and take less than 1 ms so you don't notice them.

In additon to what Vulpes said when it comes to efficiency your time is also costly. Sometimes it is more efficient to use less of our time.
