Best practive location to store application data

Hi,

I just wondered what the consensus on the best place to store application data is in a windows form application?

E.g. I have some XML files which the applicaiton creates and maintains for data storage.  Where is the best place to store these (with compatibility across windows versions), and how best to access this location?
